Yucatan before Christopher Columbus arrived to America:

The Mayans peak period was around 200 to 800 a.C. which is the Classic Period.

Around this time, a bunch of stuff happened around the world. In Europe for example, the middle age took place.

Important Facts:

Since Mayans had a great knowledge about astronomy, they created the Solar Calendar that regulated agricultural activities, such as farming or harvesting. This calendar was based on lunar movement and its faces. It was the most accurate ever created until XV century and they had another calendar for religious celebrations.

They show such a grace and precise observation of the human form that reminded the first archeologists the ways of life and classic civilization of the old world.

Christopher Columbus was very interested on finding new commercial routes towards Indian Territory, therefore he asked the Catholic Kings of Spain for a permit to explore. When he finally got it, he undertook his journey and he didn’t realize he reached a new country that had a massive wealth of flora, fauna and metals.

In conclusion, you’ll be able to find information all around this website that you probably didn’t know.

Spaniards and Native Americans had big problems between them, and none of them would surrender. What Spaniards mainly wanted was to make the Native like them and feel comfortable around them, get to know them, learn what they liked, what they didn’t like, teach them stuff they didn’t know, they wanted them to follow the same religion… Christianity.

They lost control and overtook Yucatan. Killed thousands of natives and destroyed their history. They were able to do this because Moctezuma thought that Hernan Cortes was Quetzalcoatl, so that allowed the Spaniards to get to know the natives and finally get what they wanted. The natives also confused some of the blonde Spaniards with Tonatiuh, who is the god of the sun and he is one of he most important gods in their culture.
